Some Clarkesville residents narrowly escaped injury this morning when a tree sliced through the roof of their house on View Street. It happened just before 8 a.m. Wednesday as strong winds and heavy rains swept through the city.

Hope Crawford lives behind the house that was damaged. She snapped the above photo from her back porch after calling for help. “I heard the crash and immediately went looking outside and saw the damage to the house behind me,” she says. “I called 911 and they confirmed that the people inside had just called in to report the damage.”

The damage on View Street wasn’t the only trouble Clarkesville saw this morning. The intersection of Rocky Branch Road and Washington Street was closed due to downed power lines. Downed trees blocked traffic in other areas.

Severe thunderstorms continue to make their way through the area. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until noon for Habersham and surrounding areas. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m.
