Significant Rainfall and Flooding Possible Sat-Sun

The potential for heavy rainfall and flooding seems to be growing by the model run, with the latest guidance offering the potential for 3-5+”  of rainfall across the region. Exact totals will continue to be refined but it certainly seems that we are headed towards a half foot or more of rain in the next couple of days, especially across portions of White, Habersham, Rabun, Stephens, Hall and Lumpkin Counties (and points southeast like Franklin, Elbert, Hart, etc).

The upper level low I mentioned in my last post is currently developing, and by tomorrow night should be ramping up nicely. Heavy rain is likely tomorrow, tomorrow night and Sunday as strong onshore flow from the Atlantic drags very moist air across the region, and strong winds aloft give plenty of lift for “upslope” rain (rain caused by moisture being lifted and cooled by the mountains). Given the saturated ground there is a significant chance of some flooding across the entire region, especially the counties mentioned above. This is still a developing situation however if you live in a flood prone area you MUST be prepared for the worst.

In addition, winds could get a bit gusty at times up to the 20-25MPH mark which will cause some scattered downed trees and subsequently some scattered power outages.

This is a fluid situation and I’ll be doing my best to keep you on top of the very latest.

If you live in a flood prone area, today is the day to get prepared for the worst. I’ll update again as new model runs come out. ~TW
