The National Weather Service has upgraded its Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow for North Georgia and portions of Central Georgia.
The warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.
According to the latest NWS forecast, rain will change to a mix of snow and sleet late Friday afternoon before changing to all snow Friday evening. Snow will continue overnight and taper off Saturday morning.
Accumulations of between 4 to 6 inches possible across portions of North and Central Georgia, the Foothills and Piedmont of North Carolina and portions of Upstate South Carolina.
Habersham is included in the warning area along with the following counties: Banks, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union and White.
The heavy snow will make many roads impassable and may produce widespread power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and power lines.
Expect temperatures in the lower 30s. Winds will be north 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Visibility will be less than one mile at times early Saturday.
Stay with Now Habersham throughout the weekend for continuing updates on this developing weather situation.
