Police continue to monitor the traffic situation along Highway 441 south of Clayton following a fire that gutted a popular restaurant. Mama G’s Italian Restaurant went up in flames early this morning. Heavy smoke, flames and emergency vehicles caused the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office to issue an alert shortly after 9am, telling drivers to avoid the area for several hours.
An employee at the restaurant tells Now Habersham she passed by the restaurant this morning on her way to take her children to school. When she came back by, the restaurant was engulfed in flames.
Rabun County Fire Chief Daniel Johnson says the fire was called in to 9-1-1 at 7:52 a.m. Monday. He says when firefighters arrived the “whole roof” was on fire. Johnson describes “about twenty-foot flames” shooting into the air.
Firefighters from four companies responded to the scene. They were unable to save the back side of the structure which completely caved in. The rest of the single story, brick structure appears to be completely gutted inside.
As of this time, Johnson says there’s no clear indication as to what caused the fire.
In a special statement issued to the community through Now Habersham, Mama G’s co-owner Krystyna Gaglio says she would like to thank everyone for all their love and support and their prayers. Gaglio, who co-owns the restaurant with her son Paul, says she’s very grateful that the restaurant was closed and that no one was there and that no one was hurt.
Now Habersham will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
