The Demorest City Police Department was honored at this past Tuesday’s Demorest City Council meeting.

At the Governors Office of Highway Safety Conference the department won best in service for a group with 1-10 officers.

Currently the department employs 7 officers including Chief Robin Krockum.

The award is presented to the police department that showed exceeding service in five areas: policy, amount of training, enforcement, education and how effective they were in efforts relating to traffic safety.

The award is judged and chosen by officers in Tennessee , Florida and North Carolina.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Rick Austin introduced auditing team Duncan and Kitchens. The audit group previously did an internal forensic audit three and a half years ago, when the city was in the midst of an investigation into more than $600,000 in missing funds and facing near bankruptcy.

Duncan and Kitchens’ auditor Grant Gunter spoke about the city’s financial status at the meeting. Gunter stated it’s “another successful year in terms of finance of the city”.

The city posted revenue of over $500,000 dollars from the water department. Additionally, the city was able to refinance bonds saving them approximately $1 million dollars.
